Name the Strings – viola/cello

The viola and cello has four strings. From left to right, with the bridge facing toward you they are called C, G, D and A.

The C-string is the thickest string and makes the deepest sound.

The A-string is thinner and makes the highest sound.

Practice tip – point to a string and ask your child to name the string.

Practice tip #2 – try plucking a string and see if your child can name it from how it sounds. Now try the same thing without looking.

For fun, you can make up a mnemonic to help you remember the names of the strings.

My favourite is Cats Go Down Alleys.
