Frère Jacques Progression

This is a bit of an extension exercise. The tune we’re working toward is Frere Jacques, but there are several steps along the way with different degrees of difficulty.

Level 1 – The easiest one is pizzicato on open strings (D and A).

Level 2 – Using two fingers and the notes D, E and Fis. The rhythm is the same all the way through.

Level 3 – Almost there. This builds on the last version by adding a few more of the ‘in-between’ notes. This one should be more recognisable.

Level 4 – Now we’re playing the full tune!

All the parts can be played together. Have a listen below – see if you can hear each different part.

Want to level up once more?
Violins – try playing each version one octave higher.
Cellos/Violas – try playing each version one octave lower.
